Implicit Contract w/ Knowledge Workers

Graham has an important reminder about the tacit agreement between management and highly-skilled workers (here).

Knowledge workers are educated thinking people. They expect their efforts to be acknowledged and rewarded appropriately. They expect some variety in their work, as well as a degree of autonomy. They expect the loyalty they show to be reciprocated and to be treated with respect. They expect task assignment to be realistic. A lot of this comes down to perception management.

Sadly, KM is one of the areas where this implicit understanding gets the most abused.  We ask our best and brightest to contribute content, moderate material, etc., then we don’t disseminate it, or we don’t recognize them, or we recognize contributions that are gold and those that are dross equally.
