Sean made it to the Beijing 2008 Semis

Excellent news…the Irish heavyweight four made it through to the semi-finals, so my Kerry kin Sean Casey will row another day!  From the RTE coverage:

The Irish heavyweight four have qualified for the semi-final after finishing third in their heat, only around two seconds behind winners Australia.  It is a great achievement by the Irish as Australia are favourites for the gold medal and their time of 6:02.85 certainly bodes well for the semi’s on Wednesday.  Their feat is hugely impressive considering the foursome were rowing together competitively for the first time.

They had a tough draw, but apparently their prospects to make the finals are now good (their time was seventh best overall).  They’re far from a medal favorite, but they’re a talented team that will benefit from being together for even a few more days.

The semi-finals are on Wednesday 13 August, the first heat is at 1650h Beijing/0450h Eastern time.
