PM Quote of the Day — Anonymous (bumper sticker)

Eschew obfuscation.

The price of a big, but not necessarily good, vocabulary is that I feel compelled to use it.  I’m rarely called on my verbosity, but the last time was memorable.  I was going through a demo of portal software when a colleague asked a question me whether a feature was standard.

My last business trip had been to the UK, so I guess I was a bit Anglo-happy when I answered, “No, that will require some bespoke programming.”  After the inevitable “bespoke… huh?” — I blurted out “custom code.”  Of course, there was the also inevitable “then why didn’t you say that?”

It was a bracing reminder that communication should illuminate not obscure.

Now if I could only learn to avoid cliches like the plague.
